Why I like Blackjack

First off, the game is played by a 52-deck of cards. And it has been played since the 1700s in France. At that time, it was called "Vingt-et-un" or the French equivalent to 21.

The Rules

Of all card games, Blackjack is the simplest, straight-forward, and streamlined game ever. The only thing you're required to do is to compete with other players with the dealer and get cards that add up (or as close as possible) to 21 without going over. So a hand made up of any of the aces plus a 10 or any face cards is a 21 or blackjack. With this, you win and you win more than you had bet, unless the dealer equals 21 too. That's all there is to it.

We call it Blackjack because it was taken from a special bet that paid you 10 to 1 for a hand comprising of an ace of spades and either of the two black jack (spade or clubs). Somehow, that name took hold.

The Game's Appeal

Generally, there are two kinds of people in a card game. The first likes poker, the other likes blackjack. Maybe you can say that blackjack players are more of a loner than a social animal. But the appeal of the game can be more attributed to the one-on-one, you-against-the-dealer game. It's all about a straight shot. No bluffing, no deception, no folding and appearing like a loser. Here it's all about truth. It's win or lose and nothing in between. And there's no need for schemes and methods to change that truth.

But the game is not devoid of strategies. With some experience, you'll get to know about systems that can be employed during a play. For instance, it's a good idea not to hit on 16, to double down when the dealer is showing a bust card, or to split eights.

Whatever system you follow, they aren't rules. The best in the game is won by good judgement, by gut and by luck. And whatever it is, the truth and only the truth would come out at the end of the game. The decisions you make is somehow similar to shooting a three pointer in a basketball game, when you miss it excruciating and you ask yourself why did you ever take the shot; and when you score, it's exhilarating.

Finally, probably the best appeal of blackjack is its quickness. If you lose a hand, you don't have the time to regret and to be in pain. Before you know it, you've been dealt another card, another pot of possible luck and hope - that's what gambling is in a sentence.
