Blackjack Rules

In blackjack, the player must place a wager before the cards are drawn. The bet is placed on a designated space on the table. The dealer then proceeds to draw two cards for each player and another two to himself. One of the dealer's cards is placed face down and the other is left open for everyone to see. Face cards such as jacks, queens and kings are counted as ten points, while the ace can be counted either as a one or an eleven depending on the player. All the other cards are counted according to its face value.

To win in blackjack, the total of your cards must be better than that of the dealer without going over 21.

A blackjack occurs when a player gets a ten or a face card and an ace. But if the dealer also gets a blackjack, a standoff occurs. If one wins a blackjack, the dealer pays the player 3 to 2.

Once the player receives his two cards, he has the option to either "hit" or "stand". A hit is signaled by tapping the table with the cards or with a finger. This signifies that the player wishes to draw another card. To stand is the exact opposite. A stand is signaled by moving a hand in a horizontal motion across the table. This means that no more cards are to be drawn.

If a player goes over 21, this is called a bust and the player automatically loses in the game.

A player has the option to double the bet when he receives his first two cards and is allowed to draw one more card to improve his hand. This is called "double down".

Now, if the first two cards turn out to be a pair, the player is allowed to split them into two different hands. He then bets the same amount on each hand and can play them separately. However, if the pair is an ace, only one more card is allowed to be drawn. And if per chance, the next card drawn is a ten or a face card, this is counted as a 21 and not considered as a blackjack.

If the dealer's open card is an ace, the player can choose to take on insurance, which should cost no more than half of the original wager. If the dealer's other card has a value of 10, the player wins 2 is to 1. But the player loses if it turns out to be any other card.
